About Us

Our Community

Grassy Narrows First Nation is a resilient and proud Anishinaabe community located in northwestern Ontario. Our strength lies in our connection to the Ojibway way of life, which has been passed down through generations. We are dedicated to preserving our traditions, language, and relationship with the land, even as we adapt to the changing world around us.

Our Culture

Our culture is the heartbeat of our community. The Ojibway language is spoken fluently by nearly all our members, ensuring that our children grow up immersed in the wisdom of our ancestors. Our Elders are esteemed keepers of knowledge, guiding our youth with teachings rooted in our land, traditions, and spirituality.

Our Governance

Grassy Narrows First Nation is governed by a Chief, Deputy Chief, and a council of dedicated leaders who are elected by our community. Our governance is deeply rooted in our customs, and the wisdom of our Elders plays a crucial role in our decision-making processes. We value consensus-based decision-making, ensuring that the voices of all community members are heard and respected.

Our Land

We have lived on our traditional territories since time immemorial, and our connection to the land remains strong. Many of our members continue to practice land-based activities such as hunting, trapping, and gathering, which are essential to our way of life. This deep bond with the land not only sustains us physically but also spiritually, forming the foundation of our identity.

Our Commitment to Child Welfare

Our children are the future of Grassy Narrows. Protecting their well-being, and rights is our sacred duty. In response to the challenges our families face and the impacts of colonial policies, we are committed to creating a child welfare system that reflects our Anishinaabe traditions and values. Through our Child Care Law, we reclaim our right to care for our children in a way that honors our heritage.
